On 5 March 2023, the United Nations (UN) approved an agreement of international importance to protect biodiversity in waters beyond national jurisdiction, the so-called “BBNJ” (Biodiversity of areas Beyond National Jurisdiction).

The overall objective is to protect the ocean, address environmental degradation, combat climate change and prevent the loss of marine biodiversity.

FIP Blues welcomes this treaty which will undoubtedly have an influence on the management of highly migratory fish stocks, such as swordfish and blue sharks, managed by Regional Fisheries Organisations (RFMOs) in the different oceans of the world.
